Welcome to the ChildLit Wiki and Book Recommendation Engine

The ChildLit Wiki is a resource for recommending books to children, based on the books they have already enjoyed. In addition, it is a resource for information about, and professional review and discussion of, children's books, authors, illustrators, and publishers, written by its readers. The site is a wiki, meaning that you, or anyone registered with the site, can edit almost any article right now by clicking on the edit this page link that appears at the top of each page. This site is created and maintained by Matt Berman. Quick Links: Recent Reviews, Browse Books, Login, Create a New Page, Search for a book, author, or publisher.

We've had to restrict registration -- even with a Captcha we kept getting spammers. If you would like to add content to the site, please send an email to the webmaster explaining your interest in children's books.

There's lots to be done. The more books you enter, and the more Topics you add to each book, the better the recommendations get. The more info, summaries, reviews, and discussions, the better decisions everyone can make in choosing books for libraries, reading groups, classrooms, and your own children. How about jumping in to help us out? Just Register and you can create new pages and edit existing ones. Join us!

Book Recommendations

To find a book for a child, search for a book (s)he has already read and enjoyed. Then click on Topics that indicate what was enjoyable for that child. For instance, if (s)he liked Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, on that page there are several Topics and Themes. Perhaps what (s)he liked best was the part about Learning Magic. Click on that topic to find other books with that theme. You can also combine several topics in the Search box -- for instance, Learning Magic and Boarding school. You can also scroll down to the Relateds section to see some similar books and other media. The more Topics and Relateds we add to each book, and the more books we add to the Wiki, the more refined the recommendations can be.

Purposes

  1. To provide a way to find books to recommend to children, based on what they have already read and enjoyed.
  2. To provide complete information on children's books, authors, illustrators, and publishers for parents, teachers, librarians, and others interested in childrens' literature.
  3. To provide discussion forums about individual books and authors/illustrators.

Getting started

Anyone can read any page on the site, but to create new pages or edit existing ones you must register and login.

We have several different types of pages

  • Book Page -- contains summary, reviews, bibliographic info, cover pic, Library of Congress info, flap copy and publisher promos, type, genres, topics and themes, related books, related media, related websites, different editions, parent/teacher/librarian concerns, and buttons to buy the book from Amazon or Barnes & Noble (using the button helps support this site). Go here to see a current list of the books on this site.
  • Author/Illustrator Page -- contains bio, lists of books and other works, websites, fan sites, publishers, pictures, appearance calendar.
  • Publisher/Imprint Page -- contains information about publishers, links to imprints, contact info.
  • List Page -- specially created lists of linked books, all belonging to a particular theme.
  • Articles -- user-written articles about children's books, authors, and publishing.
  • Discussion -- every page has a Discussion tab at the top, to post messages about the book, author, etc. The Discussion tab on this page is for discussion and suggestions about the site. We welcome your ideas.
  • Disambiguation Page -- used when more than one book shares a title, or when more than one person has the same name.
  • Collection Page -- used to find other books of the same type. Author and Publisher pages are also Collection Pages, as are the pages for individual Topics and Themes, Genres, and Types.
  • Reference Page -- noneditable lists of things to include in sections such as Topics and Themes. If you wish to add or change these pages, please Email Matt.

Just type in a title or name (or part of one) into the search box at left to find information, or browse books. Click on "Edit" at the top of any page to add or change information (you have to register and login first. If what you are looking for isn't here yet, you can create a new page.
